Sri Lanka not giving back Katchatheevu - Minister

Mon, Apr 13, 2015, 11:10 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Apr 13, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government says Sri Lanka has no intention of returning the Kachchativu Island to India.

Leader of the House and Minister of Plantation Industries Lakshman Kiriella, who is currently on a private visit to Chennai, told Indian media Katchatheevu Island belongs to Sri Lanka and will not be a topic of discussion with the Indian Government.

Minister Kiriella speaking to Asian News International (ANI) said the policy of the current government of Sri Lanka is to build cordial relations with India again as they were when India ceded the islet to Sri Lanka in 1974.

However, the state government of Tamil Nadu does not recognize Sri Lanka's sovereignty of the island and constantly demands the central Indian government to retrieve it from Sri Lanka.

India ceded the islet to Sri Lanka in 1974 following a Supreme Court decision and another agreement in 1976 established the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Tamil Nadu considers ceding of Kachchativu as a main reason for long-standing dispute between the fishing communities of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
