Sri Lanka government party agrees to a mixed electoral system for next election

Apr 15, Colombo: Sri Lankan government Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has said that one of the main parties of government Sri Lanka Freedom Party agreed to a mixed electoral system for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Under the mixed electoral system that the party has agreed, 165 Members of Parliament will be elected under the first-past-the post system and 85 will be elected under proportional representation system while 25 MPS will be selected from national list.

The Minister told the BBC Sandeshaya that during a discussion earlier, the Election Commissioner had proposed several alternatives for an electoral system but this is the only system which could be used without redrawing the electoral map.
