The unidentified woman was reportedly riding on the foot board of the train, which was heading towards, Colombo when she fell off in Payagala and died.
The British Foreign Office has confirmed the death of the British national but has yet to provide any more details, UK Mirror reported.
"We can confirm the death of a British national in Sri Lanka on March 29," a Foreign Office spokesman has said without identifying the victim and added that the Foreign Office is providing consular assistance.
The Sri Lankan media reported that the British woman was 25 years old.
