Vandalism rampant at Galle Dutch Fort
Mahinda P. Liyanage Galle Daily News corr.
A number of sculptures depicting soldiers of former times during colonial rules of Sri Lanka, erected at the historic gallery located at the Moon Bastian of the Galle Dutch Fort have been ruined. This has apparently been done by visitors who behave in quite an irresponsible manner while enjoying the antiquated bliss of these valued artifacts. Some limbs and appendages of the soldier statues have been crumpled causing damages to the charm of these figures.
The Galle Dutch Fortress, a UNESCO declared World Heritage site is the only living monument in the Southeast where rich cultural heritage of four world nations exists unharmed to date. A fabulous assortment of Sri Lankan, Portuguese, Dutch and English cultural, social and architectural characters can be witnessed within the heritage site.
