Wed, Feb 4, 2015, 09:50 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Feb 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka today celebrates the 67th anniversary of gaining independence from the British colonial rule in 1948 in a charm but gallant ceremony at the Parliamentary grounds at Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The theme of today's Independence Day ceremony is a prosperous motherland and a gallant tomorrow ("Piripun Maubimak - Abiman Heta Dinak").
President Sirisena opened the Independence Day celebrations with hoisting the National Flag this morning and a two-minute silence was observed before the ceremony commenced to commemorate the patriots who had sacrificed their lives for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.
A special feature of the ceremony was a "Declaration of Peace" read out paying respect to all ethnic groups killed in the civil war with a pledge not to allow violence to recur. The Peace statement was delivered in all three languages by three school students.
