A brief general amnesty period will be given to hand over illegally kept elephants, Tourism Deputy Minister Wasantha Senanayake told the Daily News. He said this decision has been taken to save the lives of the elephants as information has been received that these elephants are in danger as the owners attempt to poison them. Senanayake said the general amnesty would not last more than two weeks. The deputy minister said raids in search of illegally kept elephants would continue throughout the country despite the amnesty. He said according to information they received, some elephants are kept with forged documents and fake licences, while some elephants are kept with no documents. - See more at: http://ift.tt/166KB81
