Sri Lanka election monitors raise concerns over voter intimidation and post-election violence
Tue, Jan 6, 2015, 09:38 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Jan 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Presidential Election campaign ended at midnight Monday with several major incidents of election violence reported, an election monitoring group reported.
The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that at the end of campaigning it has documented a total of 420 incidents, with 237 major incidents and 183 minor incidents.
Dr. Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu from the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence at a media briefing held today said that concerns have been raised that voter intimidation on election day will lead to a low voter turnout, especially in the North.
Dr. Saravanamuttu said that communities and political leaders have raised concerns about the vote in the north in particular and about the deployment of security forces that could have an adverse impact on the voter turnout.
He said it is a generalized concern that the voter turnout may be low due to the expected military deployment in North and noted that everyone should have the right to exercise their franchise without any impediment at the election.
