Returning pilgrims nabbed with sat. receivers by Customs

A group of Sri Lankan pilgrims returning after a pilgrimage to Dambadiva in India had tried to smuggle in a large consignment of satellite receivers worth at Rs.1.3 million. They were detected by the Customs this evening.



Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport searched the group of pilgrims returning from Chennai on Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL122 which had arrived at 11.30am and found the contraband.



Customs had found 335 satellite receivers and 81 remote controls in the baggage of 11 of the pilgrims.


Customs spokesman, director Leslie Gamini told Daily Mirror that the leader of the group who had organised the pilgrimage had requested the pilgrims to bring in the telecommunications equipment in their luggage as a favour. (KK and SD)
