Plane crash in Athurugiriya area

A plane crashed this morning in the Athurugiriya area, the police and Civil Aviation Authority said.
The Air Force Antanov 32 aircraft had gone missing from the radar this morning after taking off from the Katunayake airport.
The plane with five people on board was on its way to Ratmalana and crashed in the Athurugiriya area in a rubber estate after hitting the roof of at least one house.
Residents said that there was thick fog over the area where the plane had crashed.
The Air Force said that the pilots had last reported the inability to clearly see the Ratmalana air strip before it crashed.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that a major fire was reported in the area after the crash. He said that the four people were confirmed killed and one person sustained serious injuries and was admitted to hospital.
The fire was brought under control by the fire brigade and area residents.
